Happiness & Sorrow! -A State of Mind!

Hi everyone and thanks for joining us for this episode of Radio Ruhaniyat!

We all sail in the boats of dukh and sukh in our daily lives. Dukh means sorrow and Sukh is happiness. But what exactly is Happiness & Sorrow? It is nothing more than a mere state of mind. We have often heard of the Hindi phrase: “ tan, man, dhan prabhu ka hai”. In other words, our body, mind and our material possessions, belong to GOD. If we truly understand the term that everything belongs to GOD, we would feel more complete, content and satisfied.

Our role in life should be just like that of a bank, in which we have the job of a teller. When a customer comes in and withdraws a large amount of money, we don’t get upset over the money that is gone because we understand that, the money just withdrawn never did belong to us. Similarly, if someone comes in and deposits a large amount of money, we don’t get overjoyed, because we know that the money doesn’t belong to us.

Life is just like this bank in which we do transactions of happiness and sorrow every single moment. We have to understand that our job is merely to do what GOD entrusted us to do and that nothing that we are dealing with is a reality. Everything around us belongs to GOD and if He chooses to take it away from us, we have no right to whine about it because it never was ours. Hence the term: Tera tujh ko saump ke, kya lage hai mera”. In other words,

“ What belongs to you, I surrender to you, what difference should that make to me”

We have to use the term “ Detached Attachment” which means that we should be attached to our material possessions, only to fulfill our duties but not to the point that we start thinking that we own them. Our material possessions include our spouses, kids, homes, businesses etc. We should operate with the awareness that God has entrusted us a responsibility towards these tasks, to maintain them and perform our duties towards them to the best of our capability, but that we do not own them. Our possessions belong to GOD and if He decided to take them away, we should willingly let go with the awareness that they always were His and that He was kind enough to let us use them and enjoy them.

Then what exactly, is the significance of materialism in our lives? Our lives are like that of a speedy highway and we are the CAR that is driving on it. God has handed us the steering wheel and we have been assigned the task of keeping the car well balanced. One edge of this highway is the materialistic world and the opposite edge is that of spirituality. The two run parallel and never meet; yet the highway needs both theses ends to make it complete. We on the other hand need to learn how to balance ourselves proportionally between the two so we could steer ourselves in the right direction.

Whether we are happy or unhappy is also our own state of mind. Some people can look at a glass, which is half full of water, and claim that it is half full and there are others who feel that if is half empty. Some people feel that there are two days of sunshine surrounding one night of darkness and there are others who think that there is one day of sunshine between two nights of darkness. The fact of the matter is that we are the ones who have to balance our state of mind and realize that if we want, we can be happy and could be the creators of our own unhappiness. God has given us the capability to make the choice.

A man was criticizing his fate that he did not get a good three course meal that day when he saw a poor man dancing around in joy, rejoicing at the fact that he was able to spot left over pizza crusts in a trash can and that his fate gave him the opportunity to have pizza that day.

And remember: Happiness and sorrow is merely our state of mind.

-Until next time, this is Preet Sahi reminding you to Stay Spiritual!
