Unity through Diversity” – Biological  Approach

Anisha Chana, 16.12.07

Unity is defined as “the state of being one or a unit” and Diversity meaning “variety.” Both definitions are to the contrary to the other.

However his Holiness Satguru Baba Hardev  Ji uses both words in one sentence. Baba Hardev Ji says “Unity is essential for man’s peace of mind & happiness. In the absence of this unity, mankind will continue in dreadful farce as it is having to do today.”

If you look at this metaphorically using medical ideas and thoughts. The human body is made up different parts, for example muscles, veins, organs and many other parts.

If we look at in depth at a few of the organs in detail, we can see that the heart’s job is to pump blood through the body, whereas the job of the lungs is to deliver oxygen to the blood and to remove the carbon dioxide out of the blood and the liver plays a major role in the body’s metabolism. Although the organs work and look different, when they work together they make up the human body. But until they do not work together in unity, it would be impossible for the body to function in different ways. Each movement we take is for granted because all the parts that this human body is made up of, however much diverse in appearance, shape, colour and size. Until they work together in unity, this body will not allow us to take steps, pick up a book or sit.

Therefore, for good health it’s essential to have unity within the body organs, just like we benefit from unity in life. As the Second Pledge of the Nirankari Mission, it brings together different religions, castes, creed and colours. So we can be united through diversity.

There are billions of people in this world, but no two persons are 100% identical to each other even if they are twins or triplets, they may look similar to each other but their DNA components are different therefore showing even though there is unity in the near identical looks through is still diversity within.

Another example which helps shows unity through diversity is when a patient comes to us for a treatment for dizzy spells, red eyes and tiredness, this can be seen as the secondary source of the problem. However when we look into the individuals case history we can notice that the patient also suffers from high blood pressure which is the primary source of the problem. Until a complete interest is taken and not analysed it won’t become apparent the two problems are connected. The problems maybe in different parts of the body but all unite back to main source of the problem. But what cannot be seen on the outside of the body is the connection within, which can cause the transference of the patients problem showing the unity within the body.

Relating this back to spirituality , a wise Saint once said the enlightened beings do not believe in outward unity or sameness like an orange which is totally segregated on the inside. Rather they are like a melon which despite having outwardly fragmented appearance is completely one inside.

There was in the news a young girl in India who had to be operated on due to her being born with four legs and four arms, many may of thought she was blessed by the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi whom she was named after. Although this young girl looked different because she was not born with two arms and two legs. Her diverse looks still did not stop her parents, doctors or community from loving her. This is because she was still a human being just like us. This shows how easy it can be to discriminate on someone who is seen to be diverse on different factors to others yet we share the unity of being human and all Nirankar’s children. So if Nirankar does not treat any of His children differently. Then why should we treat each other’s differently either?

I pray to god Satguru please bless me so I remember how much a person can be different from me, yet I should always show love and respect to one and all.
