Every April, the West Midlands branch of the Mission,
combine the message of Human Unity (Manav Ekta) with a
‘human come-unity/community’ day, in which the devotees
serve the community of Wednesbury, by cleaning the streets
and engaging with Local residents and traders by offering
friendly smiles. For the fourth year running on Saturday 24
April 2010, the devotees took part in the ‘Big Spring
Clean’, a litter-picking event organised by Sandwell
Council.
This year, not only were the devotees blessed with warm
sunny weather but were also privileged to have Reverend JRD
Satyarthi President of the Sant Nirankari Mission accompany
them, along with Constituency Member of Parliament Mr Adrian
Bailey, local Councillors Liz Giles and Olwen Jones who also
shared the Mission’s aim by wearing safety shirts stating:
“We Stand For World Peace And Unity”.
The clean-up began with words of encouragement and
inspiration from Satyarthi Ji and Mr Bailey, who also shared
his sentiments on the good work carried out by the Mission’s
volunteers.
Remembering the great importance that Baba Gurbachan
Singh ji would give to efficiency and resourcefulness, the
devotees not only collected rubbish in sacks but also
carefully separated recyclable materials from their
findings, such as glass, paper and tin, in order to be
resourceful.
The clean-up was enjoyed by young and old and upon return
to the Bhawan, the devotees began cleaning the Bhawan itself
and preparing for the next day’s Manav Ekta Samagam. The
evening’s Sangat was presided by Satyarthi Ji, who shared
thoughts on “Cleanliness being next to Godliness” and the
importance of clean hearts and minds as well as clean
streets, which together, help to make the environment a
better place to live in.
