The Mathematics of Faith

-         Dr. Ricky Madhok, USA

I once heard in Satsang that a Mahapursh believed she could only retain may be one thing from what she had heard from the Sangat.  I figured this to be fairly accurate and after doing some math I came to the conclusion that this was the equivalent of 0.01% retained.  I understand this seems like quite a small amount but attained this estimate as such.

First in each given Satsang there are numerous opportunities presented to us, in form of songs, speeches, Vichars and interactions with fellow saints, to advance our spirituality.  In addition, let us remember that it is not only remembering a thought, but the practical application of it that gives it true meaning and value.

As humans we are prone to err and thus may often forget even that ‘very single thought’ once we leave the shelter of the Satsang.  Thus saints, my humble estimate of 0.01%.  Keeping on this notion of percentage, we all consider Nirankar as One.  In mathematics:

1.0=100%

We have been taught that the way to become closer to Nirankar is through sewa, simran and satsang.  Considering, there are 52 weeks in a year, with 52 Sundays a year and a sangat each Sunday, then each week we have gained another 0.01%.  Then in one year, ten years and fifty years:

52x0.01%=0.52% (one year)

10x0.5%=5% (ten years)

50x0.5%=25% (fifty years)

Thus in fifty years time we have come 25% closer to being one with Nirankar.  Not bad, considering that Satguru and only Satguru is 100%

Now I am aware of the inevitable flaws in these calculations and in no way do I mean for anyone to attempt to use this model as a measure of their faith.  Rather I believe that our own state of bliss in life is the best yardstick to measure our spiritual accomplishment.  Nevertheless I believe there is a point to be illustrated.

Let us remember that our goal in life is not the acquisition of wealth, or the quest for fame, but rather to bring ourselves in tune with Nirankar, to be ‘one’ with Nirankar and closer to this ‘100%’.

As illustrated in this crude mathematical model this journey is indeed the work of a lifetime, so let us all pray that this be our focus in life and look to be always with this ONE.
