Time for Spring-Cleaning!

The Month of May is officially the time for spring-cleaning. We clear our wardrobes and vacuum under our beds; dusting away the cobwebs we are eager to bring the sweet smelling freshness of the spring season into our homes.

It is also that time though, when we must begin to remove the cobwebs that cling deep inside us, and to wipe away the grime of negative thoughts and feelings that have been accumulating over the past year. It is easy spot the stain on another’s clothes but to look within oneself and find similar stains is not so easy. Why? Before we can so that we must be prepared to look with an open and honest mind.

We have all experienced that last minute rush to get the house tidy before our friends come round. We could never think to have them sit an untidy or messy room. The individual’s heart is also a home, it is often said that the heart is the temple of the soul and is the special place where the good Lord resides in each of us.

If this is the case then have we ever thought to prepare our heart for the Master’s welcome, or do we simply expect Satguru to sit next to the slimy vines of ego, the noxious stains of jealousy, or the fiery heat of hatred?

Surely those who have true love and respect for Satguru would go to every effort to removes such emotions so that only the sweet smelling scent of the Master’s word should prevail.

It is in fact, these negative feelings that pull us away from the true and peace-giving words of the Master. Today we see how His Holiness Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji spends all of his precious time on tours both in India and the rest of the world simply to remind us of our duties as spiritually enlightened individuals. But as we let the dust settle we forget our responsibilities and again wander off track.

The only way for a devotee to remain on track is to look within and make a sincere evaluation of his state of mind. But how does one look within himself? Can you see your face without a mirror of course not? Likewise we need true and honest people around us – like-minded individuals- with whom we can together try to understand Satguru’s message and apply it in our personal lives. The congregation of such beings gives us the wisdom and strength to realise and accept our shortcomings, and the energy to overcome them.

Today the world does not need anymore fingers to point the blame; rather it needs strong-hearted people to change themselves for the better first. We can all make a difference, and the best place to start is with ourselves.

May Nirankar give us the strength to bring about such changes in our lives. With a little spring-cleaning] we can once more become real human beings.
